UK – Open Cosmos has secured €300M in funding to expand satellite mass manufacturing and develop connectivity and data services for its constellations. The round was led by Lightrock, with the participation of ETF Partners, Institut Català de Finances, Entrepreneurs First, and two international pension funds. Convex Group, National Security Strategic Investment Fund (UK), Phoenix Court, and Claret Capital Partners also invested.

Open Cosmos, a European space infrastructure company founded in 2015, designs, builds, and operates satellite missions end-to-end. Its platforms—OpenOrbit, ConnectedCosmos, OpenConstellation, and DataCosmos—provide governments, institutions, and businesses with secure communications, Earth observation, and real-time intelligence services.

This latest round is a significant increase from its previous €50M funding, marking six times that amount. The company boasts five consecutive years of profitable growth, securing over $370M in contracts in just three and a half years.

Open Cosmos aims to manufacture one satellite daily across four factories, achieving a 100% mission success rate. Its next-generation OpenConstellation satellites reduce Earth observation intelligence delivery time from up to 48 hours to as little as 30 minutes using onboard AI processing and satellite-to-satellite links.

The company’s rapid progress is evident in its accomplishments: designing, building, and launching ConnectedCosmos satellites within two and a half months of securing Ka-band spectrum filings. This efficiency paves the way for faster deployment and wider availability of services.

Open Cosmos’ architecture comprises four key components:

  • OpenOrbit: Designs, builds, and operates spacecraft.
  • OpenConstellation: Enables governments to share infrastructure rather than each funding their own.
  • ConnectedCosmos: Provides sovereign broadband and IoT links.
  • DataCosmos: Processes imagery for operational use.

A practical example is a satellite detecting a temperature anomaly in a forest, classifying it as a potential fire onboard, and immediately relaying this information to firefighters when terrestrial networks are unavailable. This capability highlights the strategic value of European sovereignty in space infrastructure.

The timing aligns with a global surge in space venture investment, reaching €11.3 billion in the first half of 2026—surpassing the total for all of 2025. European governments are actively discussing the concept of sovereign infrastructure, and Open Cosmos’ shared constellation model offers a compelling alternative to US-based systems.
