Parents at an elementary school less than 1,000 feet from the Tesla plant want more time to question a plan that could raise emissions from the factory, as reported by Matthew Brown in SFGate.

Lila Bringhurst Elementary sits in close proximity to the plant. Tesla has applied to change emission limits on two aluminium melting furnaces and add new equipment to cut nitrogen oxides, according to a notice from the Bay Area Air District.

"It was sort of obfuscating", parent Jenny Lin told SFGate.

Many parents only became aware of the plan after an anonymous Substack post on October 1st. Using the district’s own engineering papers, it claimed one measure of emissions would rise thirteenfold. However, Nicholas Spada, an air quality researcher at UC Davis, explained that while the figure is significant, it encompasses all suspended particles, some of which are harmless.

The district maintains that the estimates remain within their limits and would require continuous monitoring of the furnaces. A petition requesting an extension of the comment period, which ended on Monday, garnered over 1,000 signatures. The plant is already under investigation by the district for allegedly inaccurate emissions reports.

Tesla did not respond to SFGate's request for comment.
