Samsung and IKEA Make Smart Home Accessibility a Reality with $6 Smart Bulbs

April 21, 2026 – 2:49 pm

In short: Samsung SmartThings and IKEA have announced a significant integration where 25 new IKEA Matter-over-Thread devices can directly connect to a SmartThings hub without the need for IKEA’s DIRIGERA hub. This means smart bulbs starting at just $5.99, undercutting competitors by half.

Samsung SmartThings and IKEA have joined forces to make the smart home a reality for many more people. Starting today, 25 new IKEA smart home devices can directly connect to a SmartThings hub using Matter over Thread, eliminating the need for IKEA’s own DIRIGERA hub as an intermediary. This means that a $6 IKEA smart bulb can now be part of the same system controlling your Samsung television, refrigerator, and washing machine—all communicating locally without relying on the cloud.

The significance of this move is profound: it brings interoperability to the forefront of the smart home market at an affordable price point. For years, the promise of a connected home has been just that—a promise. Now, with this integration, it’s becoming a reality for countless folks.

The new devices include:

  • KAJPLATS smart bulbs in 11 variants starting at $5.99
  • GRILLPLATS smart plugs
  • Scroll wheel remotes
  • Smart buttons
  • MYGGSPRAY motion sensor at $9.99
  • MYGGBETT door and window sensor at $7.99
  • KLIPPBOK water leak detector at $9.99
  • ALPSTUGA air quality sensor at $29.99 measuring CO2 and PM2.5

Bulbs, plugs, and remotes connect directly to a SmartThings hub through Matter. Sensors, however, require either the IKEA DIRIGERA hub or an alternative third-party option. Blind and shade control will be added later this year.

Why it Matters Technically:

Previously, integration required both an IKEA DIRIGERA hub and a SmartThings hub with DIRIGERA acting as a bridge between IKEA’s Zigbee devices and the SmartThings ecosystem. Now, these new devices use Matter natively over Thread—a low-power IPv6 mesh networking protocol that allows devices to communicate directly with any Matter-compatible controller. Samsung and IKEA have completed multiple rounds of validation for connectivity stability and have built a dedicated user experience within the SmartThings app for managing IKEA devices.

This integration is a game-changer, bringing us one step closer to a truly interconnected smart home landscape.
