Satellogic Appoints Former US Spy-Satellite Intelligence Head as President
Satellogic has appointed Frank D. “Trey” Whitworth as its president, handing over day-to-day operations of a commercial Earth-imaging company to someone who recently led America’s spy-satellite intelligence agency. The announcement was made today by the company.
Whitworth, a retired US Navy vice admiral, served at the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA) from June 2022 until November 2025, overseeing a team of approximately 16,000 people. He has been advising Satellogic since March and will commence his new role immediately, reporting to CEO Emiliano Kargieman.
His responsibilities at Satellogic will be wide-ranging, including:
- Running internal operations
- Aligning mission delivery with sales and marketing efforts
- Setting strategy for the defence and intelligence product line
Whitworth’s career spans 36 years in military intelligence, having also served as:
- Intelligence director for the Joint Staff, US Africa Command, and Joint Special Operations Command
- Deputy director for computer network operations at the NSA
- A contributor to expanding the Pentagon’s Maven program, a machine-vision effort initially developed by Google.
Satellogic itself is a relative newcomer to the scene, founded in 2010 by Argentine engineers. It operates 18 imaging satellites and went public through an SPAC merger in 2022 with Steven Mnuchin as chairman. Their next major launch, Merlin, is scheduled for October and aims to provide daily global coverage.
“Persistent Global Intelligence is no longer a future concept; it’s an operational necessity,” said Whitworth.
Kargieman added that Whitworth’s "unique qualifications" make him “ideally suited to help us scale”.
The company emphasizes the importance of continuous intelligence gathering rather than isolated images, a point of differentiation in a market with many larger players. Ultimately, Satellogic is vying for government contracts against established operators, and Whitworth’s experience navigating complex procurement processes gives them a significant advantage.
