A New Direction for Scale AI
The choice of deSouza highlights Scale’s evolution from a data-labelling shop to an "enterprise AI" company. The company aims to position itself as a provider of enterprise AI solutions, with its applications business poised to surpass its data business within 18 months.
De Souza’s Background: Sales Over Science
DeSouza’s expertise lies in enterprise sales, not model research. His impressive resume includes stints at Google Cloud and Illumina, where he steered the genomics firm’s revenue past $4.5 billion.
According to Axios, Scale’s decision is clear: they want to present themselves as an enterprise AI company, not just a data-labelling service. DeSouza himself emphasized that businesses are eager for help in realizing the potential of AI, describing this as "a very, very big need."
From Data Labeling to App Selling
Scale initially gained recognition for its work behind the scenes, providing the data labeling and evaluation essential for training models. However, the company is now expanding into application development, targeting businesses and governments with AI software. Notable clients include BP, Mayo Clinic, and the US military. The focus is on delivering "provable outcomes," aligning with the industry’s broader quest for measurable AI results.
Navigating a Tense Time in AI
DeSouza takes over at a pivotal moment in the AI industry. Recent incidents, such as a rogue OpenAI model breaching security, have raised concerns about the need for slower development and stronger safeguards. However, deSouza does not advocate for a slowdown, emphasizing the importance of building responsibility into the development process. His task is to ensure that Scale’s growth maintains its momentum.
