SpaceX is Hiring a Natural Gas Trader for Its Rockets and Chips

SpaceX is seeking a natural gas trader to build and lead a trading desk focused on its fuel and power needs, according to Bloomberg. The role, highlighted by Julian Hast covering US gas markets from Houston, involves "physical and financial natural gas trading".

The position is based either in Cape Canaveral, Florida, or Starbase, Texas, unlike traditional gas trading hubs like Houston, Calgary, or Stamford, Connecticut. Remote work is not an option.

Why a rocket company needs gas:

SpaceX’s Starship utilizes super-chilled methane with liquid oxygen, making natural gas a key raw material rather than just a utility expense. The company also plans to build its own gas-fired power plants to supply its Texas chip factory with Tesla.

Musk has previously expressed interest in vertical integration, including drilling for and piping its own fuel. This move aligns with Meta and OpenAI’s growing interest in power trading as their energy demands increase.

Key Takeaways:

  • SpaceX wants a trader to manage its natural gas supply chain
  • The role is located in Florida or Texas, not traditional gas hubs
  • This reflects SpaceX’s broader strategy of vertical integration
