SpaceX's Massive Investment: A Second Starbase in Louisiana
SpaceX is spending $100 billion on a second Starbase, located in Vermilion Parish, Louisiana, on a former Exxon site. This self-sustaining spaceport is set to include its own propellant production, power generation, deep-water shipping, vehicle processing, and an airport.
Construction and Timeline
Construction is scheduled to begin in 2027, with the first Starship launch targeted for 2029. However, Louisiana Economic Development estimates initial operations might not start until 2030.
Job Creation and Environmental Concerns
The project promises 3,000 direct jobs over ten years, averaging $92,600 annually, plus over 30,000 construction roles at peak. These figures are significant for the coastal Louisiana region, which has historically relied on oil and gas industries.
Environmental considerations include coastal erosion and wildlife impacts, with SpaceX stating its intention to partner with state and federal agencies to expand Louisiana’s Coastal Master Plan and address ecological concerns. However, these commitments remain vague.
Launch Cadence and Starship’s Future
The primary advantage of the second site is increased launch cadence. Currently, a single pad complex in Texas limits how frequently Starships can launch. With this new facility, SpaceX aims to demonstrate the vehicle’s full reusability, which is crucial for its economic viability.
