Spotify Launches Conversational AI for Premium Users in US, Ireland, and Sweden
Spotify launched a conversational AI feature for Premium users in the US, Ireland, and Sweden, allowing them to interact with the app by typing or speaking. Users can request specific music, podcasts, or audiobooks, and refine their requests with follow-up questions. For instance, they could ask, "play some artists I haven’t heard before" and then adjust further: "add some Bad Bunny", "make it more upbeat."
The app can also provide insights into an artist’s background, album release dates, or genre. This feature extends beyond music to podcasts and audiobooks, enabling users to ask about the creators and stories behind these content types.
AI Integration and Personalization:
Spotify has been gradually incorporating AI into its platform, including AI-curated playlists and music generation tools. The conversational interface is a significant step forward, transforming the app from one that users tap through to one they talk to.
Kids’ Managed Accounts Expanded to Free Tier
In a separate announcement, Spotify expanded managed accounts for children aged 13 and under to its free tier in several countries, including the US, UK, Australia, France, Germany, and the Netherlands. These accounts provide young listeners with their own space to explore music while giving parents control over content boundaries.
Spotify aims to offer a safe listening environment by defaulting to blocking explicit content, making accounts private and unsearchable, and disabling video and Canvas visuals. Parents can further customize their child’s listening experience by blocking specific tracks and artists.
Spotify’s Response to Regulatory Pressure
This expansion comes in response to growing regulatory pressure regarding children’s online safety. Meta (formerly Facebook) recently implemented global content settings for Instagram, Facebook, and Messenger, aged 13 and up, while the UK is considering a complete ban on social media for under-16s. By offering managed accounts as a default option, Spotify seeks to anticipate regulatory mandates rather than wait for them.
These new features highlight Spotify’s efforts to personalize its platform for both adults and children, creating distinct but interconnected user experiences.
