Tandem Health Raises $100 Million to Turn AI Scribe into Clinic Software

Stockholm’s Tandem Health has raised $100 million in a Series B round led by the Scaleup Europe Fund, which EQT manages. It is the fund’s first healthcare investment. The company aims to transform its AI medical assistant, currently used by 10,000 care organizations, into software that runs entire clinics.

Tandem announced the round on September 14th. Existing investors Kinnevik, Northzone, Amino Collective, and Visionaries also participated.

Following this round, Tandem’s total funding reaches $160 million.

From AI Scribe to Clinic Software

Tandem started as an AI scribe, software that listens to a consultation and drafts clinical notes. Today, it offers an AI medical assistant that prepares patient summaries, provides clinical decision support, handles documentation, coding, and follow-up tasks.

Three components of the product hold Class IIa medical device certification under the EU Medical Device Regulation: the scribe, the coding assistant, and the decision support. Tandem achieved these certifications in the past six months and connects to over 130 medical record systems across Europe.

The company claims 10,000 care organizations in 14 European markets use its software, including Ramsay Santé, Humanitas, and the NHS. The UK is its largest market by user count.

Future Plans and Investment

The new funding will be allocated to:

  • Deep expansion in existing markets.
  • Development of an "AI-native Clinic Operating System" incorporating triage, scheduling, and patient communications.

As stated by Lukas Saari, CEO and co-founder, "Europe should be setting the standard for how AI enters healthcare, not adopting someone else’s."

About the Founders

  • Lukas Saari: Founded Tandem in 2023 after leading McKinsey’s Nordic healthcare analytics team and working on machine learning at Spotify.
  • Oliver Åstrand: Built AI products at Google X and Uber.
  • Oscar Boldt-Christmas: Spent 20 years as a senior partner at McKinsey, leading its European healthcare practice.

Acquiring Juvoly

In January, Tandem acquired Juvoly, a Dutch AI scribe handling over 200,000 consultations per month for 1,500 GPs and other clinicians.

Competition

Tandem faces competition from other European startups like Nabla and Heidi Health, as well as US-focused Abridge.

Research Results

According to a study in JMIR Medical Informatics, clinicians using Tandem’s software report:

  • 29% less time on admin
  • 30% higher job satisfaction
  • 30% less administrative stress

These figures are based on a survey of 177 clinicians at Capio Ramsay Santé, a Tandem customer in Sweden.
