Tesla’s Cybercab Launches Internally, Staff Get First Rides
Tesla is said to be readying its purpose-built robotaxi for public roads in Austin as soon as this month. The first passengers, though, will be Tesla employees, not you.

Tesla’s Cybercab, the purpose-built two-seat robotaxi with no steering wheel and no pedals, is reportedly set to hit public roads in Austin as early as this month. According to The Information, the initial riders will be Tesla staff, who will receive rides on pre-mapped routes within the company’s existing Austin robotaxi service.
The internal target for this milestone is the end of August, though those involved caution that the timeline could slip. This cautious approach mirrors Tesla’s launch of its first commercial robotaxi hub in Austin last year.
Preparation has included test drives around the Austin campus since July, training sessions with local emergency services, and public road testing of the production version starting in June.
Production is a notable achievement; Tesla has been building Cybercabs at Gigafactory Texas since February, with over 100 spotted on factory lots by July. However, this mass production comes with a caveat: Tesla cannot legally sell these vehicles to the public as they lack proper controls and permissions in most jurisdictions.
Despite this gap between announcement and reality, Tesla highlights its robotaxis’ 380,000 driverless miles across its hubs, contrasting with Waymo’s 220 million rider-only driverless miles. Its unsupervised Austin fleet has reportedly shrunk to around 17 cars from about 25 in the spring, operating within carefully mapped geofences.
This cautious scaling doesn’t diminish the Cybercab’s significance. A car with no steering wheel is a bold step forward, and regulators are increasingly accepting this format, as evidenced by Amazon’s Zoox winning approval for charging for rides in a wheel-free robotaxi.
Yet, the initial focus on employee trials offers Tesla protection from potential public embarrassment while allowing an official launch.
