The $2.1 Billion “Worst Idea Ever”: How Gamma Built a Profitable Empire with 50 People

Grant Lee still remembers the investor’s verdict.
“Yeah, so the investor said it was the worst idea he had ever heard.”

This came in 2020, when Grant Lee and co-founders Jon Noronha and James Fox launched Gamma in San Francisco.

Six years later, that “worst idea” is a $2.1 billion company, a profitable AI-powered visual communication platform used by over 100 million people, and poised to disrupt PowerPoint and Google Slides. While AI startups chase growth with hundreds of millions in funding, Gamma has achieved $100 million in annual recurring revenue (ARR) with approximately 50 employees—and has been profitable for over 15 consecutive months.

This summer, as competitors slash headcounts and search for funds, Gamma is expanding into London, Asia Pacific (APAC), and releasing its most advanced product yet.

The Problem Gamma Set Out to Solve

Grant Lee didn’t set out to build an AI company; he wanted to fix a problem that had long bothered him:

“We decided to build Gamma because we really believe that we want to help change how people communicate their ideas. PowerPoint as a tool has been around for many years, but many of us have spent late nights trying to format or design presentations rather than focusing on the content itself. We truly believe that Gamma can be the visual language that makes it much easier for people to get their ideas out there.”

The team launched their initial product in 2020, before ChatGPT and the generative AI boom. It focused on providing users with building blocks for creating presentations quickly, aided by AI. By 2023, they integrated large language models, enabling users to type an idea and instantly watch it transform into a designed presentation.

The Anti-Blitzscale Playbook

Gamma’s growth story contradicts Silicon Valley’s usual narrative:

While competitors like Tome raised $81 million, hired 60 people, then pivoted, Gamma raised approximately $90 million in total funding and kept its team lean. This resulted in roughly $2 million in revenue per employee—four times more efficient than Salesforce.

“We really kept the team lean for a long time,” explains Grant Lee. “That allowed us to move quickly and adapt.”

He attributes their success to focusing on excellence and avoiding distractions from competing products or categories.

By late 2025, Gamma achieved:

  • $100 million ARR profitably
  • A $68 million Series B round led by Andreessen Horowitz at a $2.1 billion valuation
  • A $20 million secondary liquidity event for early employees
