Traditional Firewalls vs. AI-Specific Protection

Nearly half of organizations are entirely blind to the machine-to-machine traffic their AI agents generate, and traditional network monitoring tools were never designed to look inside a prompt. Check Point’s AI Network Firewall, launched this summer, aims to close this gap within existing enterprise infrastructure.

According to recent research:

  • 48.9% of organizations have zero visibility into AI agent traffic.

This isn’t just about anxiety; it’s a specific problem as organizations lack means to monitor autonomous agents’ activities across connected systems. This is increasingly crucial as agents are used for:

  • Accessing data and online services
  • Interacting with customers
  • Completing tasks without human approval

These changes necessitate new security monitoring requirements. A log showing service communication cannot, alone, confirm whether an agent followed company instructions.

Why is this a challenge?

Traditional cybersecurity solutions were built around:

  • Signatures
  • Rate limits
  • Predictable human sessions

Agents can improvise legitimate requests without triggering known attack signatures. Encryption further complicates matters as AI traffic often travels over HTTPS, requiring specific certificates and policies for decryption.

The Two Types of "AI Firewall"

There’s a key distinction:

  • An AI-powered firewall detects conventional network threats using machine learning.
  • A firewall built to protect AI inspects prompts and agent interactions for AI-specific harm, addressing prompt injection vulnerabilities exploited in recent coding agent attacks.

Check Point’s AI Network Firewall, announced in July, adds AI-specific inspection to existing firewalls. It claims to:

  • Detect and classify employee use of generative AI tools
  • Monitor AI agent activity and Model Context Protocol (MCP) interactions
  • Inspect real-time traffic to and from AI applications using MCP
Clock
