Hotels Embrace ChatGPT: A New Frontier in Travel Booking
Two hotel groups have taken a significant step into the world of ChatGPT this week, marking a new era in travel planning and booking. However, despite their integration, both Radisson and Motel 6 are hesitant to allow direct payments through the platform.
Radisson’s AI-Powered Approach
Radisson Hotel Group launched an app built with Accenture, offering services for over 1,000 hotels worldwide. While in-chat booking is promised later, the initial focus is on enhanced search and loyalty recognition powered by AI.
Gianni Di Fede, Chief Commercial Officer at Radisson Hotel Group, emphasized the group’s commitment to embracing AI technology: "AI is radically transforming how people search for and book hotel stays, and we are committed to being at the forefront of this shift."
Motel 6’s Plugin Solution
G6 Hospitality, owners of Motel 6, introduced a plugin covering nearly 1,500 economy locations across the United States and Canada. This integration is part of their strategy to leverage generative AI for travel planning, which has seen a significant surge in usage, as per Deloitte research.
Consumer Preferences and Payment Barriers
Accenture’s survey among 25,590 people revealed interesting insights into consumer attitudes towards AI-driven purchasing. While many are open to AI assistance in certain tasks, only a small percentage are willing to let AI make full purchase decisions, especially when it comes to payments.
Radisson’s announcement aligns with this research, highlighting that while 87% of travelers are receptive to AI travel agents and 71% expect AI to influence their hotel spending, the majority still prefer to complete transactions on the hotel’s own website.
Strategic Move Away from Online Travel Agencies
The integration of ChatGPT apps by these hotel groups is a strategic move to bypass online travel agencies (OTAs) like Booking.com and Expedia, with whom hotels have historically paid significant commissions. This shift is driven by the desire to gain direct access to travelers and control their booking experience, potentially at lower costs.
Conclusion: A New Landscape for Hotel Bookings
The entry of major hotel brands into ChatGPT signifies a profound change in the travel industry’s search and booking landscape. While direct payments within ChatGPT remain a technical limit or strategic choice, the real target is arguably to capture the traveler’s attention and steer them towards their own websites, ultimately reducing OTA commissions and increasing direct bookings.
