Uber Launches $5 Doorstep Return Pickups for Uber Eats Purchases Across 5,000 US Cities
April 17, 2026 - 6:00 pm
Uber has introduced a new service called Return a Package, allowing users to have items they wish to return picked up at their doorstep for a $5 fee. This feature is available in the Uber Eats app across nearly 5,000 US cities and partners with nine retailers, including Target, Best Buy, and Dick’s Sporting Goods.
A courier will arrive, retrieve the item, and deliver it back to the store. Uber One members pay just $3 for this service.
Limitations
While convenient, Return a Package has certain restrictions:
- Items must have been purchased through Uber Eats.
- The value of the purchase must be more than $20 and not exceed $100 or 30 pounds in weight.
- Customers can send up to five packages per request.
These constraints mean this service is not a universal replacement for traditional return methods, but rather a convenience layer for specific purchases made through Uber's marketplace.
The Returns Problem
US retail returns reached a staggering $850 billion in 2025 (National Retail Federation). Online purchases have higher return rates, costing retailers between $10 and $65 per return, including shipping, labor, inspection, and restocking. Return fraud adds another significant loss of $103 billion.
Uber's Approach
Uber positions its service as a natural extension of its existing courier network, which delivers food and groceries. The low marginal cost of adding return pickups to a courier's route makes it an attractive option. The $5 fee covers Uber’s cut and the driver's compensation for this short trip.
For customers, it eliminates the hassle of packaging items, finding labels, and visiting drop-off points during business hours.
Competitive Landscape
Uber faces competition from established players like UPS, which has acquired Happy Returns, and Amazon, offering returns through Whole Foods and Kohl’s partnerships. FedEx and USPS also maintain their own return infrastructure.
Return a Package differentiates itself with on-demand pickups, providing a seamless and convenient experience for customers.
Uber's Logistics Expansion
This new service builds upon Uber Connect, launched in 2023, which already facilitates peer-to-peer package delivery to USPS, UPS, and FedEx locations. Return a Package adds the reverse direction, allowing couriers to collect items and return them directly to retailers.
This strategic move expands Uber's reach into logistics, positioning the company as a significant player in the industry beyond ride-hailing and food delivery.
