US safety regulator says it is evaluating Tesla’s Cybercab rollout

US Safety Regulator Evaluates Tesla’s Cybercab Rollout

The two-seater Tesla Cybercab, a battery-electric self-driving car with no steering wheel, pedals, or mirrors, has begun carrying passengers in limited areas of Austin. America’s road safety regulator, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), is investigating this new robotaxi service.

"NHTSA is in contact with Tesla and is evaluating the situation," confirmed a spokesperson for the agency, according to Reuters.

The Cybercab’s lack of traditional controls raises questions about federal motor vehicle safety standards, as these generally require vehicles to be equipped with a steering wheel, pedals, and mirrors. Tesla has not applied for an exemption from these requirements.

The unique situation in the US vs Europe: In contrast to Europe, where a vehicle needs type approval before carrying passengers, the US allows services like this to begin operating first and face regulatory scrutiny later.

The Cybercab’s launch was notably low-key, with Tesla hosting an event behind closed doors in Austin instead of a typical public unveiling. A small fleet is currently operational, with 45 Cybercabs registered in Texas compared to 988 Waymo vehicles in the state.

Reuters tested the service and encountered issues like long wait times and incomplete trips. Tesla’s rapid rollout compresses years of testing by competitors into a shorter period, raising concerns about safety.
