Valarian Raises $50m to Empower Governments in Using US Cloud
Valarian, a London-based startup co-founded by a former Palantir executive, has secured $50 million to enable governments and companies to leverage American cloud and AI technologies while maintaining control. This funding comes amid growing concerns regarding data sovereignty, particularly after the US cut off access to Anthropic’s models abroad.
The Core Offering: ACRA
Valarian’s software, ACRA, operates as a sealed room around an organization’s AI systems. It allows entities to run their workloads on American infrastructure while Valarian controls data access, ensuring who can view, touch, or shut off the data. This addresses the US CLOUD Act, which empowers American authorities to compel US-based companies to share global data.
A Response to Growing Concerns
For years, infrastructure sovereignty was a theoretical concept. However, this year, when the Trump administration blocked access to Anthropic’s models abroad, it became a pressing reality. This event underscored the need for solutions like Valarian’s.
UK Support and Funding
The UK government has shown interest in Valarian’s offering. An incoming prime minister is aiming to cancel a state Palantir contract, as reported by The Telegraph. MPs have warned about the risk of having access cut off at the whim of partners.
Defence Minister Luke Pollard and AI Minister Kanishka Narayan have emphasized the importance of developing "sovereign AI" capabilities, indicating support for UK-based solutions like Valarian. Co-founder Max Buchan advocates for prioritizing home-grown options when capabilities align.
Valarian’s Pitch to Investors
Valarian is part of a growing trend of startups offering control to governments and firms worried about data sovereignty in the age of AI.
