ZuriQ Raises $25.5M to Scale Its 2D Quantum Architecture
ZuriQ, a Swiss quantum computing company spun out of ETH Zürich, has raised $25.5 million in a seed round to scale its trapped-ion processors built on a novel two-dimensional architecture. This funding follows a $4.2 million pre-seed round closed in 2025.
The investment was led by Quantonation, with participation from Forward.one, Extantia, Firgun Ventures, and ZuriQ’s previous backers. It comes at a time of strong European quantum investment, marking the continent’s first publicly listed quantum firm.
A New Approach to Quantum Computing
ZuriQ’s processors are natively two-dimensional, contrasting with legacy designs that rely on one-dimensional chains of ions trapped in complex junctions. Their design uses Penning micro-traps and a static magnetic field instead of oscillating fields, allowing for more flexible ion movement and reconfiguration.
Professor Jonathan Home of ETH Zürich, a scientific adviser to ZuriQ, highlights the advantage:
“Hold ions in a line and the count grows one at a time; hold them in two dimensions, and it grows with the area of the chip… The ions can be moved freely in three dimensions, so they can be connected together far more flexibly.”
Demonstrating the Technology
The company has already built a working demonstrator within 18 months—a 3×3 array of nine individually controlled ions, representing the largest two-dimensional array of its kind to date. This was developed with researchers from ETH Zürich and fabricated by manufacturing partner Infineon.
Dr Pavel Hrmo, ZuriQ’s co-founder and CEO, emphasizes:
“We spent longer in the lab… Our architecture is two-dimensional from the ground up, so the number of qubits we can place on a chip will grow far more readily than in systems built on a legacy blueprint.”
This funding enables ZuriQ to expand its team and research and development efforts, aiming to significantly increase the number of qubits its 2D architecture can support.
