This act aims to do something Amazon has long avoided: directly employ the couriers who deliver its packages.
Despite Amazon’s claims, this isn’t primarily about jobs or prices; it’s about confronting a useful fiction. That fiction is the gap between the logo on a courier’s vest and the name on their payslip. The bill would require any company running last-mile delivery hubs in New York City to directly employ those who deliver packages, focusing primarily on Amazon, though FedEx and other regional couriers would also be affected.
