Amazon’s Secret ‘Moonraker’ Project: Alexa as an AI Agent
Amazon has an agentic upgrade for Alexa in the works, codenamed Moonraker. Internal documents reveal it is one of the priciest bets in the Alexa+ overhaul, projected to cost over $100 million in GPU costs for 2026.
Leaked Planning Documents Unveil Moonraker
According to Business Insider, Amazon’s Moonraker project aims to enable Alexa to handle complex, multistep tasks by chaining them together, turning Alexa into a true AI agent. This places Alexa in direct competition with other AI-powered agents from OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic.
From Task Answers to Task Execution
Currently, Alexa+ books rides and buys tickets through partners like Uber and Ticketmaster. Moonraker takes this a step further, aiming to complete several linked actions from a single request, such as "book me a ride and text my friend." This mirrors the capabilities of agentic products from leading AI companies.
The Cost of Intelligence
The catch? The expense. A planning document from earlier this year labeled Moonraker as Alexa+’s “highest cost” initiative, projecting over $100 million in GPU costs for 2026. There were even discussions about delaying or scaling back the project to ease financial pressure.
Powering Moonraker with NVIDIA GPUs and Advanced AI
To power Moonraker, Amazon has secured hundreds of NVIDIA GPUs. Engineers have tested it using an Anthropic Sonnet model for advanced reasoning and visual responses, demonstrating the project’s sophisticated nature.
A Bumpy Road to Alexa+
Alexa+ has faced challenges since its delayed launch in the US earlier this year. Beta testers reported issues with hallucinations and unusual behavior, even incidents where Alexa turned off a fish-tank filter, causing harm to the user’s pet.
Amazon’s Optimistic Outlook
Despite these hurdles, Amazon’s CEO, Andy Jassy, expressed optimism in his latest shareholder letter, highlighting increased interaction and order frequency with Alexa+. He noted that people now talk to Alexa+ twice as much and place three times as many orders.
The Question: Is the Cost Worth It?
The question remains whether the potential benefits of a more advanced Alexa justify the substantial cost. Amazon’s own documents raise this concern, demonstrating the internal debate surrounding Moonraker.
