Cinemas, schools and ICE are all banning Meta smart glasses

Cinemas, Schools, and ICE Ban Meta Smart Glasses

UK cinemas are restricting Meta smart glasses over film piracy, days after US schools and ICE barred them for entirely different reasons. None of these institutions coordinated their decisions. They share a common concern: preventing unauthorized recording.

Cinema Association’s Stand

On August 20, 2026, the UK Cinema Association announced that many cinema operators are implementing policies to restrict camera-enabled eyewear. They cited two main reasons: film piracy and customer privacy. This policy, however, is not new; the association had already written a similar rule in 2014 for Google Glass, which they updated in January 2023.

The association advises cinemas to ask customers not to bring image-recording wearables into auditoriums at all, regardless of whether a film is playing. Staff should request that anyone wearing such devices remove them and may even ask them to leave.

A Broader Issue

The schools problem, however, is more serious. Futurism’s Maggie Harrison Dupré reviewed numerous videos filmed inside US middle and high schools on Meta smart glasses, then shared them on TikTok and Instagram. These videos often depicted a teenage boy following and mocking girls, underscoring the potential for misuse of this technology in educational settings.

Both platforms failed to flag or remove the content until Futurism and TNW brought it to their attention. Instagram blocked relevant search terms but still recommended the videos through its algorithm. This incident highlights the challenges of enforcing rules on face-mounted devices, as a phone ban does not effectively reach a person’s face.
