This rapid increase was attributed to DeepSeek’s $7.4 billion funding round in June, which elevated its valuation from about $10 billion in April to a staggering $50 billion.
Unusual Funding Terms
What makes this round noteworthy is not just the size but also the unconventional terms. Liang contributed roughly 40% of the total funding, amounting to approximately $3 billion, drawn from his profits at High-Flyer, a quantitative hedge fund he co-founded.
The round was reportedly oversubscribed, indicating strong investor interest despite the unusual structure. The valuation for this round has been a subject of discussion, ranging from $45 billion to $59 billion, depending on the metric used (pre-money, post-money, or target). Beijing’s state-backed funds were among the investors, reflecting its strategic significance.

Liang has stated that the funding will be primarily allocated to pursuing artificial general intelligence, with a focus on releasing open-source models rather than immediate commercialization. This strategy ensures his independence from external investors.
Comparisons with American Counterparts are interesting, highlighting differences in their financial structures and governance. In contrast to Amodei and Brockman, who hold minority equity in widely funded companies with complex governance, Liang owns most of DeepSeek without any outside investment until this year.
