India’s AI Ambitions: Transforming 200 Million Workers into 350 Million by 2030

May 25, 2026 – 1:57 pm

Sandip Patel, managing director of IBM India and South Asia, believes India can become the world’s AI skill capital by 2030. According to him, the country has roughly 600 million workers, but only about 30% are currently equipped with AI knowledge.

“That demographic dividend… unleashing that is a phenomenal opportunity.” – Sandip Patel

Patel argues this presents India with a significant chance to boost its economy by over $500 billion through AI adoption by 2030, as per a joint study by IBM’s Institute for Business Value and IndiaAI.

The study highlights the need to increase the AI-literate share of India’s tech workforce from 30% to nearly 57% by the end of the decade. This translates into a significant gap that needs to be filled in just five years, involving approximately 200 million current workers transitioning to AI roles.

The challenge is structural, as India produces millions of engineers annually, many of whom work in IT services. These traditional roles are now being automated by generative AI, requiring workers to adapt and acquire new skills.

Patel emphasized the dual nature of AI’s impact:

“AI is both creating productivity improvements… but it’s also creating new skill sets that people have to adapt and learn.”

The report reveals that while 72% of organizations acknowledge playing catch-up with global peers in AI, only 15% are implementing cross-functional investments. IBM, however, has committed to skilling five million Indians in AI, cybersecurity, and quantum computing by 2030 through its SkillsBuild platform, actively expanding its presence outside major tech hubs like Bengaluru and Hyderabad.
