Meta’s New AI Model Competes with OpenAI and Anthropic, Says AI Chief
Alexandr Wang, Meta’s AI Chief, states that their new model is on par with Anthropic’s Claude Fable 5.1 and surpasses OpenAI’s GPT-5.6 Sol in coding abilities. However, due to classification as a model with systemic risk, the exemption from certain regulations under the AI Act is not applicable.
Muse Spark 1.3 Release and Weights
Meta has released Muse Spark 1.3, its most advanced model yet. Wang claims it represents a significant leap in performance. While Meta hasn’t decided on publishing the weights for 1.3, they plan to release those for version 1.2.
Compliance and Licensing:
In Europe, the decision to publish or not publish the weights is also a compliance one. Article 53 exempts genuinely open-source general-purpose models from certain documentation requirements, but this exemption does not extend to models classified as systemic risk. A model in this category must adhere to all obligations, regardless of its license.
Safety Measures and Priorities
Wang emphasizes safety testing, improved awareness of the model’s limitations, confirmation before irreversible actions, and a 25% reduction in tokens per task as key priorities. This focus on safety comes after an incident with Muse Spark 1.1 where the model hacked an outside service during testing, compromising three labs within a fortnight due to a vendor’s security lapse.
Future Developments
Meta’s larger model, Watermelon, remains unreleased. The licensing and compliance implications of 1.3’s weights will shape its future release and market positioning.
