OpenAI (this site on openai) Secures $30 Billion Round from Abu Dhabi and BlackRock
OpenAI is in advanced talks with Abu Dhabi's MGX and BlackRock for a massive $30 billion funding round. This comes after Abu Dhabi's MGX discussed a syndicate of up to $10 billion among UAE funds, without a traditional lead investor. Europe's AI program, while carrying a similar headline figure, has only secured approximately €1 billion in public funding.
As previously mentioned, OpenAI is seeking this round at a fixed price of $1.4 trillion valuation, with no lead negotiator. The round remains unsettled and details may change. This follows their $122 billion raise in March, valuing the company at $852 billion, including cash.
Instead of the typical investor submission and negotiation process, OpenAI has presented its figure directly to potential backers like MGX and BlackRock, who already co-manage a $30 billion infrastructure vehicle.
MGX, led by Sheikh Tahnoon bin Zayed Al Nahyan, has raised close to $50 billion this year and holds stakes in OpenAI, Anthropic, and xAI. Other potential participants include the University of California's endowment, Thrive Capital, and Andreessen Horowitz.
While Europe also boasts a $30 billion AI initiative, its commitment pales in comparison to the private sector investments being sought by OpenAI. Each of the EU's proposed seven AI gigafactories is designed to produce at least 100,000 AI chips, with construction starting in early 2027 and initial operations by mid-2028.
In summary, this $30 billion round marks a significant step in OpenAI's quest for massive funding, as it navigates the global landscape of potential investors and seeks to solidify its position at the forefront of AI development.
