Revolut to Open Airport Lounges in 2027
Revolut is building its own airport lounges, starting in Copenhagen in 2027. The $115bn neobank, known for its digital-first approach, is taking a significant step into the physical world.
A Logical Next Step
The company plans to offer premium airport lounges across Europe, partnering with Plaza Premium Group, a leading provider of airport lounges worldwide. This move follows Revolut’s recent expansion into various services, including travel booking, mobile phone plans, co-working spaces, and even ChatGPT subscriptions, all within its app.
Hadi Nasrallah, head of Revolut’s New Bets division, described Copenhagen as the "perfect fit" for this new venture, targeting what they consider a key growth market. The company aims to roll out a similar concept across other European markets.
Loyalty and Profitability
Lounges are highly prized rewards in consumer finance, and Revolut hopes to capitalize on this by offering them directly to their customers. With revenue reaching £4.2bn last year and subscriptions growing 67%, the company’s balance sheet supports its ambitious expansion. A recent secondary share sale valued Revolut at a staggering $115bn.
The strategy is centered around loyalty, aiming to keep high-spending users within their ecosystem as they aim for a potential listing and further growth.
Competing in a Crowded Market
While Revolut enters the lounge space, they face competition from established providers like Priority Pass, LoungeKey, and airline-owned lounges. They will also need to navigate any lingering customer dissatisfaction from recent changes in their lounge access partnerships.
However, the move symbolizes Revolut’s ongoing quest to become a "super-app," offering an extensive range of services beyond traditional banking.
