Sam Altman: The World Should Accept Some Harm from AI

OpenAI chief Sam Altman (find out more) believes that while AI brings significant benefits, it's crucial to accept some harm along the way. In an interview with Politico for the inaugural edition of Decoded, a new tech newsletter and podcast, Altman stated that the advantages of AI outweigh potential negative outcomes.

He expressed his disagreement with the notion of restricting access to AI entirely, arguing that it would be an unacceptable compromise. Altman's perspective is that individuals will predominantly use AI for good, but mitigating severe risks like loss of control over advanced systems is essential.

The discussion also touched on the AI safety pact signed by tech leaders at the White House and Trump's proposal to rename "superintelligence." Additionally, OpenAI is set to testify under oath at a New York City Council hearing on AI safety this Monday.

Altman's views contrast with those of Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, who recently advocated for slowing down advancements in AI models. Despite their differences, both advocate for responsible AI development and regulation.

"We believe that the world should accept some bad things happening for the benefits of this technology and people having the agency." - Sam Altman
