TikTok adds an AI shopping assistant and one-click checkout to its app

TikTok Adds AI Shopping Assistant and One-Click Checkout to Its App

TikTok (see details) is enhancing its e-commerce capabilities with the introduction of an AI shopping assistant and a streamlined one-click checkout experience. These features, announced at Advertising Week New York on Monday, aim to revolutionize how users shop directly from brands within the TikTok app.

AI Shopping Assistant and Buy Direct

The AI shopping assistant is a conversational bot that remembers user preferences and provides detailed product information, shipping details, and availability. It answers questions about sizing and helps complete purchases in real-time conversations.

"Buy Direct," an in-app checkout feature, allows users to purchase products from brands directly through the For You feed with just one click, eliminating the need to leave TikTok.

TikTok has partnered with commerce platforms and payment providers like Salesforce, Shopify, Shoplazza, and Stripe to build these features.

Agentic Leads for Advertisers

In addition to shopping enhancements, TikTok introduced Agentic Leads, an AI agent that engages in conversations with potential customers, qualifying them as sales leads. This feature will operate through direct messages on TikTok and lead forms on advertisers' websites.

Expanded Ad Network and AI Integration

The TikTok Ad Network is now accessible to US advertisers, offering campaigns across nearly 400,000 apps outside of TikTok. The platform's advertising tools also integrate with various AI platforms, utilizing the Model Context Protocol, an open standard for connecting AI agents to software.

Other updates include automated search ads, streamlined content approval for AI-generated and creator content, and cost optimization for TikTok Shop ad campaigns, taking into account affiliate commissions.

Shopping Beyond TikTok Shop

While these features are integrated throughout the app, they extend beyond TikTok Shop, the marketplace launched in the US in September 2023, which eMarketer estimates generated approximately $15.8 billion in US sales in 2025.

Competitors like Synchrony are also incorporating shopping into AI tools, with plans to integrate store cards from ChatGPT. According to NIQ, over half of US consumers now use AI for shopping.
