Uber to buy ezCater for $2.3bn to bring workplace catering to Uber Eats

Uber to Acquire ezCater for $2.3 Billion to Integrate Workplace Catering into Uber Eats

Uber has agreed to acquire ezCater, a US platform specializing in workplace catering, for a cash consideration of $2.3 billion. The announcement, made jointly by both companies on Tuesday, marks an expansion of ezCater's catering services to Uber Eats and Uber for Business, Uber's corporate account service.

About ezCater

Based in Boston, ezCater allows businesses to order food for meetings, events, and recurring staff meals from over 140,000 US restaurants. The platform generated over $2.5 billion in gross bookings in the past 12 months, with year-over-year growth in the high teens. With an average order value exceeding $400, ezCater is a profitable business on a non-GAAP operating income basis.

Benefits of the Acquisition

Dara Khosrowshahi, Uber's CEO, highlighted the potential impact of the deal:

"Catering is a big business, and can be a huge revenue stream for restaurants. With Uber’s reach, we can bring that experience to millions more customers and help restaurants win more of these valuable orders."

The acquisition offers multiple advantages for restaurants, customers, and couriers:

  • Restaurants: Larger order volumes and new customer acquisition opportunities.
  • Customers: Simplified group food ordering for various events and gatherings.
  • Couriers on Uber Eats: Access to "attractive new opportunities to earn."

Nihad Rahman, ezCater's CEO, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership:

"We’re thrilled to be joining forces with Uber. We’re energized to bring our catering and B2B expertise to Uber’s global ecosystem of customers, merchants, and couriers."

Competitive Landscape

This move by Uber comes as a response to DoorDash's recent entry into office catering in April. DoorDash for Business offers tray-style orders and Meal Manager, a tool for handling recurring office meals. DoorDash reported that large team orders were growing 30% faster than regular orders.

Uber's Recent Developments

The ezCater acquisition follows several other changes at Uber this year, including workforce reductions and partnerships with drone delivery firms like Zipline.
