YouTube will now pause livestream ads when chat engagement peaks

YouTube to Pause Livestream Ads When Chat Engagement Peaks

YouTube will now automatically hold back advertisements during livestreams when its systems detect that chat engagement has peaked, a change designed to prioritize the collective viewer experience. The platform announced this feature on Monday along with other updates to live-streaming tools.

Key Updates:

  • Ad-Free Windows: Viewers who purchase Super Chats, Super Stickers, or virtual gifts will enjoy personal ad-free windows immediately after their transaction.
  • Collective Ad Pause: The platform will pause ads for all viewers in a stream when chat engagement surges, not just those with Premium subscriptions. This aims to protect the "collective vibe" during pivotal moments.
  • Opacity Around Engagement Threshold: YouTube hasn't disclosed the duration of ad-free periods or the precise method for determining engagement thresholds, to prevent manipulation through bots and spam.

Beyond Ads: Rewarding Fan Spending

The new system treats fan contributions (through Super Chats etc.) and ad revenue as complementary rather than competing, offering paying viewers a tangible benefit beyond their highlighted message. YouTube takes a 30% cut of Super Chat and Super Sticker revenue, with creators keeping the remaining 70%.

This move comes as live streaming becomes a primary revenue driver for many YouTubers.
