DoorDash Launches AI Text-to-Order Agent for Apple Messages
DoorDash has introduced an AI agent (get the details) (read more here) that allows users to place food orders directly through Apple's Messages app. The agent utilizes your order history and stored payment information, charging you via text message. This feature is currently available on a waitlist in the US.
How It Works
Upon messaging "order my usual protein bowl to the office," for instance, the agent links your phone number to your DoorDash account, reviews your past orders, and charges your saved card. It can also suggest recipes based on refrigerator photos, as demonstrated by Bloomberg's testing of an early version.
Legal Implications in Europe
Unlike in the US, where this functionality is considered a bug, differences between quoted and charged prices in European markets could raise legal issues under consumer protection laws. DoorDash, which owns Deliveroo and Wolt in many countries, must navigate these regulations carefully.
Market Consolidation
The delivery food market is experiencing consolidation, with Uber's $14.8 billion acquisition of Delivery Hero and Just Eat Takeaway merging with Prosus. This leaves DoorDash and its AI agent in a prominent position, especially as they look to expand into Europe.
Future of AI Assistants
Andy Fang, a DoorDash co-founder, believes AI agents represent a new app paradigm, stating that people are already ordering more frequently. Other companies like Instinct have raised significant funds for similar order-generating AI tools.
DoorDash is exploring an official integration with Meta's Messenger platform through their Muse agent, with CEO Tony Xu serving on Meta's board. This would enable bulk ordering through company assistants, as demonstrated by internal use cases at SpaceXAI, Cognition, and Mercor.
However, the implementation of such technology in Europe is subject to the AI Act, which requires users to be informed when interacting with AI systems. The interaction between this rule and Wolt's operations is a point to watch.
