EIF’s Incoming Chief: Europe’s Tech Champions Funds Hold 15 Unicorns
Jean-Christophe Laloux, incoming chief executive of the European Investment Fund (EIF), revealed that Europe’s Tech Champions Initiative backs 15 European unicorns through its €4bn fund of funds.
Focus on Key Sectors
Laloux emphasized the need for Europe to provide its startups with the capital required for domestic growth, stating, "It’s not enough to innovate in Europe. You also must be able to scale in Europe." He identified deep tech sectors where Europe holds a competitive edge:
- Climate
- Security and defense
- Space
- Biotech
He also highlighted the recent launch of Isar Aerospace's Spectrum rocket, funded in part by the EIB Group.
Addressing the Funding Gap
Laloux noted a shift from early-stage innovation to scaling up as the main funding bottleneck. The Tech Champions Initiative aims to address this gap by investing in €1bn venture funds.
Expanding the Initiative
He announced plans to announce a second version of the initiative in November, which will also back smaller funds of €300m to €500m and introduce a platform for institutional and private investors.
Italy’s Participation
Italy contributed €150m to the initiative, leading to investments in seven Italian companies, demonstrating international interest in the country's startup ecosystem.
Alternative Financing Mechanisms
In addition to fund investments, the EIB Group provides venture debt and structures equity funding through the European Innovation Council for early-stage startups. This approach offers startups deferred repayment and lower interest rates in exchange for equity or warrants.
