WhatsApp May Soon Let Users Schedule Messages
It's important to note that WhatsApp is testing a feature that allows users to schedule messages, ranging from ten minutes to two weeks in advance. This was spotted in an Android beta by WaBetaInfo.
The main use case being promoted is handling work messages outside of regular work hours, which is regulated in eight European countries and restricted by law in Portugal.
WhatsApp's scheduled messaging feature works by holding the send button, selecting a delivery time, and the message sends automatically at the chosen time, even if the app is closed. It supports text, links, photos, and videos, all while maintaining end-to-end encryption.
However, WaBetaInfo pointed out some limitations:
- Only one photo or video can be included in a scheduled message.
- In a group chat, the message reaches only those who were members at the time it was set.
This feature is similar to what Telegram has offered since 2019, making WhatsApp a game changer in catching up.
The significance lies in the legal implications related to work messages outside of work hours in Europe. Several countries have implemented laws, such as France's right to ignore after-hours emails for firms with 50 or more employees, which Portugal took further by restricting employee contact outside work hours, with fines for non-compliance.
Scheduling messages is, therefore, a tool for compliance, allowing managers to send messages outside of traditional work hours without disturbing employees. However, the message's timestamp doesn't reflect the scheduled time but rather when it was initially composed.
There is currently no EU-wide rule, and the protections remain national and inconsistent.
